Lum and Abner meets the National Cartoonists Society!
Fellow National Cartoonists Society member John Rose informed me that a page of Lum and Abner original art showed up in one of the segments streamed during the two-day NCS Fest this weekend. You also see art by John who produces Barney Google and Snuffy Smith every day! View the segment here:
Another surprise came when I was viewing a segment called Chapter Roundup in which regional chapters of the NCS reported on their recent activities.
Both the Lum and Abner Comic Strip and its goofy cartoonist, Peter Pitchblend (or is his name Dummy Patchwork?) show up in this segment (and no, I do not imbibe “adult beverages,” fellow members of FUMC Carthage):
Please enjoy my friend Hy Eisman’s acceptance speech. I grew up reading Hy’s work and am blessed to have met him in 1997. We’ve been friends ever since. Hy was honored with The Milt Caniff Award for Lifetime Achievement! Hy’s accomplishments are numerous. He’s a two-time winner of the NCS Divisional Award and at age 94 is still producing the Popeye Sunday strip!
A big congratulations to Mr. Ray Billingsley, the 2021 winner of the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist! His daily and Sunday Curtis is always a delight!
Initially, two of the above video segments showed up as “unavailable.” Hopefully all is working now.
