How did all this happen?
Here is the story!
Early in 2014, I was contacted by Mike Curtis, the writer of Dick Tracy. He asked a favor. He wondered if I might write a cameo into Lum and Abner for his good friend known as Coffee. Coffee had already appeared in Dick Tracy and Gasoline Alley.
I agreed to do so and you can read that strip by clicking here.

And then Mike delivered the question that stunned me.
“Would it be possible to have Lum and Abner appear in a Dick Tracy Sunday strip?” After I stammered a bit, I said that I would love to make that happen!
Permission was secured through the owner of the “Lum and Abner” franchise, Chester H. Lauck Jr., the son of the man who portrayed Lum.

Not only did Lum and Abner meet the great detective Dick Tracy, but they also met Little Orphan Annie! The storyline was part of a series of strips that earned writer Mike Curtis and artist Joe Staton one of their multiple awards for excellence!

Mike Curtis, writer of the award-winning Dick Tracy comic strip poses in character!
Dick Tracy illustrator Joe Staton’s self-portrait! His accomplishments are represented by the many characters depicted.

I would cross paths with Mike Curtis again through the world of Lum and Abner, both in person and through our respective comic strips.

Many thanks, “Team Tracy”:
Mike Curtis, writer,
Joe Staton, artist,
Shelley Pleger, letterer and inker,
and
Shane Fisher, colorist!
